Professional Tips on Conducting Background Investigations (Part 2)

Continuing from part 1, we further discuss professional tips which can quite come in handy when conducting background investigations.

1.     Social Media

This tip is a no-brainer. The whole world seems to be living online and with social networking websites like Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram, individuals are sharing a lot more than they should. However, this over-sharing of information can be very handy when you’re conducting background checks on people. On the other hand, with social media, you have to remember to be very picky with the information you acquire. It is a proven fact that people project an idealized version of themselves on these sites, rather than what they really are.  This means you have to use the information which most relates to your target.

2.     Motor Vehicle Reports

Although this is mostly done for businesses, motor vehicle reports aren’t just necessary for those who operate large vehicles for companies. Motor vehicle records give you a critical glimpse into the personality of the individual and can help you understand whether they are reliable in case of any risk or not. Candidates who request MVR information mostly do so, so they have authentic information about their employees.

3.     Ask a Past Colleague, Not An Employer

When conducting an employee background check, this is one tip that works best. For those seeking information on potential employees, the best information comes, not from the supervisor or manager, but from the candidate’s fellow employees. This way, not only do you get to find the details about the person’s professional life, but you also get a glimpse into how the person would be in a personal setting.

4.     Double Check Your Information

Take all the information you have and sweep it all together. Then start planning it by calendar. When working on background checks, the most rookie mistake you can make is not double-checking whether your information is authentic or relevant. You might make a mistake, or find a fluke lead along the way.  By checking to see if all the information lines up, you get the right information in appropriate order and relevance.
